There’s something very special about Goolwa
Our beautiful clean environment with all its heritage provides you with a unique destination. We have many places to eat and/or drink with plenty of choices where you can enjoy fresh local produce. These range from coffee and cake to fine dining, or fish and chips by the water.
We have a myriad of art galleries and gift shops stocked with locally made goods - you’re sure to find that special something to take home.
If you love the beauty and adventure of the outdoors, there are walking and bike trails as well as parks, gardens and playgrounds or if you prefer water-based activities, we have the river, the Coorong and the sea. Options include a gentle paddle, some adrenalin-filled action, or taking a guided tour.
The township and waters of Goolwa are full of history beginning with the Ngarrindjeri. Learn about the first white settlement here, the river trade and ship building at the wharf and Australia’s first passenger railway.
Our unique features include the Murray Mouth and the combination of steam transport – nowhere else in the world can you explore the amazing environment of the Coorong and the River Murray as well as taking a ride on a paddle steamer and a steam train.
Spending time in Goolwa offers opportunities for indulgence, relaxation, education, exercise, entertainment, sports participation, artistic inspiration and lots more. There is something for all members of the family and we welcome you to share it with us. Goolwa in the Alexandrina Council area is the first town in Australia to be accredited as Cittaslow.
